Christmassive mix from harbour funk cruise

A merry ol Yuletide to ye all. I prey the spirits run freely from your chalice tonight and all the next day. In lieu of a special Christmassive mix, here's a bonus 3 hour raw mix taken straight from the decks at the Harbour Funk boat party.

It starts abruptly (no time for edits, I promise to polish it in the new year) and features Santa's lil selectors, Lanu from the Bamboos/Cookin on 3 burners, Frenzie, Mr Glass & Robin Knight.
It was a kickin day on the harbour, the sun was shinning and the soul was burning. The mix gets a little quiet two thirds through as we pulled the SoulShaker floor volume down on the mixer to compensate for everyone running to the lower deck when Cookin on 3 Burners fired up. Fair enough I say, who can compete with a bunch of 45's compared to this tight unit banging the authentic sound out live. Nice work guys, nice work. The after party down the Civic saw Kylie Auldist join the 3 burners on the mic. It's a shame so many people missed this gig. Nice work John for putting it together and brings Kylie & the Burners to town. I'll be sure to get them back in the new year for some more shows.

Big ups go out to Toon from the Soul Pole dancing academy. Photos coming soon my man.

Down load, plug in and get off on three hours of soul, jazz, funk, hip hop, boogie & disco. This one is for the car on that summer road trip to Byron Bay. Click link below to get it.

After blowing our limit out, I have reposted the mix on DivShare!

HARBOUR FUNK: SUN 21st DEC

Harbour Funk! Its a day of water bound funk festivities on board the Lady Rose. Here's the deal, and its a f#%king steal, for $55 bucks you get a day out on the harbour with none other than the SoulShakers Robin Knight, Mr Glass & Frenzie dropping a tug boat load of funk nuggets on you all day long. We'll be setting sail on our soulful voyage in search of paradise lost at 12:30pm from King st wharf and returning at 5pm. At

which time, we reclaim the land and storm the Civic for the continuation of our journey.

Shit, I should also mention that Cookin on 3 Burners are doing a live gig on the boat, big bad pirate Russ Dewbury will conjure up a storm of his own and the little Latino flavoured maestro from the Bamboos, Lanu will also be creating waves on the high seas. Add to the cabin crew, Huwston & the capt'n of this funk junk JC. Now that's an unsinkable tonnage!

Check out the MoFo Money Mix 2 for a sample of the of what I may stow away for the cruise.
Here's 16 straight up funk 45 nuggets I put together this arvo. ROY AYERS @ the forum fri 24 Oct

Roy Ayers is gracing the country girt by sea once again thanks to James Browning's Niche productions. Now if you are reading this blog you know that Roy is the man and there is no need for me to go through a detailed education on who and what this man has done, or what his significance is to the world of soul funk jazz. I for one am very familiar and fond of the ubiquitous one, as it was myself and original Funkinc partner Paul Carroll who bought Roy to Australia in 1993.

Roy Ayers always delivers a stellar performance and travels the world with nothing short of a top ranking band comprising of members touting resumes as impressive as Roy's himself.
If the Ayers experience were not enough, Niche are packing this gig to the freaking rafters with Nostalgia 77 from the UK plus our own internationally acclaimed Bamboos, who for good measure will be joined by Kylie Auldist. No wonder he doesn't have any room for me to play!

Ive loaded up a cut from Roy's seldom seen 1983 album "Lot's of Love" I do believe this slice of soul funk boogie has been repressed and you can dig it up as a nice fresh pressing. I nabbed my dusty ol' copy of Regal. I chose "Fast Money" for your listening pleasure as its a up tempo electro boogie track that fits with a lot of peoples current listening, playing, buying and dancing pleasures....

Here's a couple from the streets of San Francisco

Tom Thump has sent me a couple of edits & mashes....

Trampolines R Tangerine "Lazy on the Metro"

TRT is myself (Tom Thump) and Thomas Fokas (DJ Stink). I tend to hate most mash ups because they so often one bad song combined with another that's worse! Love Metro Area (Muira) and love (admittedly, in a corny way) Doug Lazy (Let the Rhythm Pump). They came together pretty perfectly.

Ty w/ Tony Allen "The Willing" (Tom Thump Re Edit)

Great track with incredible Tony Allen (of Fela fame) on percussion. Loved the original especially the horns. So, I doubled up on those and got rid of the annoying blathering intro on the original.

Playgroup w/ KC Flightt "Front2Back" (Tom Thump Extended Edit)

When is Trevor Jackson gonna do another Playgroup record! Let's all go bang on his door and demand one. What an amazing album it was. Took the Mantronix bit and put it and the start and made a few more cheeky changes.

Corrina Joseph with Michael Watford "Baby, I'm Scared of You"

This track features Basement Jaxx vocalist Corrina Joseph and house music crooner Michael Watford parlaying a solid version of Womack & Womack's 80's killer "Baby, I'm Scared of You". Tried to licensee this for the MIDNIGHT SOUL series on Kinkysweet Records. But, could not find the label, or release anywhere online. So hear it is!

MOMMA SAID SAMPLE THIS!

Here's a sample of what Momma's got for ya at the Flinders for you on the 6th Sept. I've whacked together a little bit of everything here, in fact this lil 70 minute mix has 19 trax covering 42 years from 1966 to 2008. We have some Northern Soul, 70's funk, 80's boogie, 90's uk soul, trip hop, break beats, NYC poetry, deep disco, nu electro funk, and fresh soul funk edits. I knocked it up in a hurry on the one n twos, please excuse it being a bit chunky in places (one take and half of it was blind selecting towards the end) but I think I've managed to make a bunch of relatively varied trax stack up together to give an insight to the vibes Momma wants to share with you. I hope ya dig it and I look forward to some feed back.

80's Funk Mix

Staying home on Saturday night ain't so bad.... it gave me a little bit of me time, which means music & wine, well scotch & coke to be precise.

In the mood for some 80's originals? This ones got quite a bit of soul in it too so be careful...

Hope you enjoy.

Winter Warmers Mix

If you look back through the archives you will find the Soulshaker Summer Mix unfortunately I didn't get round to doing an Autumn Mix so don't bother searching the blog, there ain't one...

Hopefully this should make up for it....
This is a journey back to my old mix tapes days, it contains a range of stlyes, one or two rare classic's and a couple that have been given a bit of re-edit treatment, there's also a new track from the modern disco maestro Dave Lee, AKA Joey Negro, & The Sunburst Band. This tracks taken the latter's new album Movers & Shakers A cracking album and well worth the dollars so get out a buy it...

Hope you Like?

Funk 45 MoFo Money Mix

Funk 45 MoFo Money Mix, that's 45 minute worth of funk 7". Remember those things in the picture, they're my turntables and seven's I just used and dj's used them way back in the day kids... The mix is a little rusty, I threw it together in one take tonight with 17 of my fav 45's and a couple of nasty shaftman samples. I recorded on our super cool Roland Edirol 24bit hand held recorder (this mix is straight of the SD card) This thing is so dope, you just drop it in your top pocket and plug straight out your mixer in any venue and hey presto! you have a mix down. Expect to see loads more up on the blog thanks to this lil gizmo.

Listen: MoFo Money Mix

One for Rob

"Mikki" Farrow, Itching for Love. This be the Disco mix, I was going to put the 9 minute dub version from the B side (I prefer) but I thought I would hold out just a lil... This was co written & Produced with the late great Norman Harris. Mikki has a hand full of 12's floating about and seemed to do her fair share of writing and collaborating with heavy weights the like of Huff & Gamble but to name a few. You can also find her credited as a backing vocalist here, there and...
Check it out, its a sweet slow boogie jam that I think I might drop tonight at the Polo lounge. I'm there for 5 hours, sure I'll get time...

Bottle - Whole Damm Thing....

Been after this for a while, not a lot of info on this one yet, I might have to come in a day or with some background on who they are and from where they come.... Bloodfire's their name and this fine re-work of the Gill Scott Heron Classic comes from Vol. Six of their release's under this name. I'm pretty sure they are also doing stuff under another name, bare with me, I'll be back with more detail - in the mean time enjoy this..

Nasty Masterpiece

Clarence Reid may be better known to you by his alternate persona & Stage name of Blowfly. Clarence was a songwriter for many hit soul acts in the 60's & 70's such as Betty Wright, Sam & Dave, Gwen McGrae and KC & The Sunshine band. As Blowfly, he has recorded numerous albums, mostly porno-matic sex spoofs of other songs as well as original raps themed around sex. His stage name originated from his grandmother, who overheard him as a child singing "Do the Twist" as "Suck My Dick", and said "You is nastier than a blowfly."

Clarence recorded a few hits of his own in the 60's including "Nobody But You Babe" under his real name and a Blowfly song called "Rap Dirty" in 1965. Many hip hop historians consider "Rap Dirty" as the first rap song because he talks in rhyme and it has then slang term for talk "rap" in the title.

My personal favourite of Clarence Reid's is this track I've loaded up for you "Masterpiece." Kenny Dope has recently release this on his Kay Dee records as a 7" edit & dope beats edit, but here it is in its original form as it was recorded in 1973? Date not printed on label.

Remember me....?

Faaaark, almost forgot how to put a post up its been that long since my last. Many apologies for slackness, that four letter word called work has been interrupting the better parts of life. Shouldn't complain as it's mine & Robin's latest business venture and late night dj'n that takes up our time. Both of which are oh so dear to our hearts and way, way far too much of fun really, especially when you are playing a live PA set with Elisabeth Troy. Last night at the SHE party I had the immense pleasure of having the UK songstress (of soul/2 step/dnb/and most recently "house") sit in with me for a live mic set. She tore the roof of the Piano room! Does anyone have any pictures....
C'mon back real soon ya all, I'll have a couple of mixes up in the coming day or so.

Winter Warmers #2

Oh no I'm in the mood now, 2 glass's of red just went down way to easy and we're moving on to number 3 as we type... spelling may get a little iratic, music should be the focus...

In the trade they call this "A Tune"

10 points if you know it???
Comments please!

Winter Warmers #1

Sunday afternoon at home, opened a nice bottle of red and enjoying a little music on the first day of winter, It's all about the black plastic.
Ah memories....
Here Ya Go, yep that's me... seems like a life time ago, I borrowed the photo from a face book group, not sure where it was taken, I'm guessing it was the first Vibes On a Summers Day, Seagull Room.
I promise, no more photo's of myself after this one ( Pete, can you stick a few photos up of me?)

This track would have been on the play list I think..

What a Little Tresure You Are...

Well done Frenzie.... like the look of the blog... Very Smart.

Needs a good posting I think, I don't normally like to stick to much new stuff up as I believe we should by the new ones and share the old ones.
However, this one can be the exception to the rule.

Quality quality quality, all the way to the bank, a fine piece of re-touching I must say.

Why Did It Take So Long...

The answer to that question is pretty simple... we need more hours in our days.

If we could start the world over, I'm off the opinion that a 27 hour day would be more useful, with the one proviso that we don't work any longer than we do now but have more time in a day to do the stuff we like doing, unless you are one of those rare individuals that actually does a job that you like, no I didn't think so, they're pretty rare. I planned on being one but we all know how life changes and we end up doing loads of stuff that is a complete pain up the arse....

Oh dear! what am I going on about... It's Monday and I'm trying to post something nice for you lot to download, forget all the ramble above, I was going to delete it and start again, but these are my thoughts, and I think I need to get rid of them somewhere, so it might as well be here...

Enough... Stop reading and download the mix... It's far more inspirational than this rubbish..

You should all know the tunes, if you need a track listing ask vis the comment

MELODY STEWART - GET DOWN GET DOWN

I've been spending so much time creating the new Soulshaker website that I thought I should drop a bit of content.. So here it is, My first post on this blog, and an exclusive edit that I made a while back, in it's full 8 minute's of glory.. Complete with fukt up galactik space drums..
The original features edits from the great Jim "Chopper" Cohn, who did a lot of the edits for the Roy B label, as well as an infamously hard to find edit mix for the 1982 Battle Of The DJs on WKTU.. Holler at me if you got those tapes..

M.I.A.......

Ok ok, I know it's been a while so please forgive me. I was thinking about making up some great excuse but then I thought why bother, let's just get to the music. This is a little something which is perfect for a rainy old day like we have here today in Sydney.
I just finished listening to the entire album whilst looking out my window over a wet and stormy coastline and I must say it's one of the best new albums I've heard in a long time. If you are a fan of good soul or jazz (which I think you may be if you are reading this blog!) then please go buy this album. You will not be disappointed. The guys name is Jose James and this is a track off his new album "The Dreamer" on Brownswood Recordings. And yes, that's the Worldwide maestro Mr Gilles Peterson's label so the odds are in your favour. Enjoy!!

OUT IN THE WINE BAR

East End wine bar classic, I think what made this popular was his name as much as the track, we all loved using the word "ponse" strange....

A quality piece of 80's funk, 1983 to be precise, he did release a couple of other tracks but none up to the standard of this.

Casanova Your Playing Days Are Over

Well here it is, bout' time, finally, took your time, better late than never.

Yes (Pete) this is my first post (with track attached) for 2008, and what a little cracker, if I do say so myself, this did get the re-edit treatment last year but to be honest it didn't cut it.
In all it's original glory.....

Thumbs up for these fresh gigs

Fark... Funkinc kicked on Saturday night and sucked in if you missed it. I will take this opportunity to make a big shout out to Frenzie & Simon Caldwell for their superb services. Robin & I played between the lads and then I bought the bacon on home with the last shift til 5am.
I have a couple of gigs to endorse coming up over the next few weeks: Niche productions presents
Freddie Cruger aka Red Astaire@ Ruby Rabbit Friday 8th Feb,
With Mark Walton & a great bunch of locals. I will be on the top floor VIP bar, (DE NOM) banging out some choice soul funk cuts and bent boogie tunes for the champagne ladies & cashed up gents.

The second gig I give the good old double thumbs for is the Turntables on the Harbour gig. Yeah, you got it! Nickodemus from Turntables on the Hudson in New York is being returned to Sydney for another night of eclectic jazz beats and dance floor breaks to name but a few of the genres you may hear at this event. I saw him last time he was in Sydney and he ripped that shit up dude. He's a fav of my good mate Tom Thump in San Fran and they regularly cross the states to play at one another's gigs. If I hadn't been playing with J Boogie the same night in SF, I would have caught him there as well.
Sat 23rd Feb-Boat Party. Click on fler for more details
Those crazy Germans the Mo Horizons will also be on the bill. Sadly enough, we SoulShakers are not on the bill but do not let this discourage you from the best gig this town will have that weekend.

Men are from Mars... maybe

Apparently Men are from Mars & Women are from Venus. This would probably explain why a couple of these lovely ladies on the album cover look suspiciously like men after a closer look at the picture. I guess its a precursor for any gezza who wants to hang with the Venus gang. The track Love to fly' is an floating cosmic funk jam structured on the o'jays 'for the love of money'. I think they were a bunch of frenchies and this may explain the lady dresses. This cut "Love to Fly" has recently been bootlegged and can be picked up on Clone Records out of Denmark. I may drop this early on Sat night as an early floor wrmer or perhaps as a late night sleazy wrap up...

DJ Frenzie's Tribute to Mel Cheren

“This was a really hard mix to put together. The reason being that Mel Cheren's back cataloge is just so huge, and I really wanted to cover the various styles represented by the 3 labels that he worked with.

Mel Cheren was known as the godfather of disco, and with good cause. Details of his involvement with the Paradise Garage, his pioneering DJ record pool, his ground breaking DJ Promo 12inches, and his various charity work for Aids victims can be found else where on the internet.
With this mix I tried to cover his time at Wand, Scepter, and of course Westend (whose tunes take up the majority of this mix).
There was still so much ground left to cover, such as the early hip hop work that Spyder D and DJ Divine produced, which to this day I still can't find - although I do give B Beat Classic a spin. (Any sellers get in touch!)
Mel continued releasing records through West End right up to present day, and there is a whole catalog of recent music that didn't make it into this mix, apart from the beautiful Leela James tune, which I hope may give a sense of what the label is producing in recent times.
I also made a conscious decision to include one side of the classic mastermix medley produced by Tony Humphries in 1982 - Simply because it is just so awesome, and really flies through some of the classics from West End that I didn't have time to play in their entirety.
So here it is - My take on one of the legends of dance music.
RIP Mel..”

Are You Lonely

Here's a fav track of mine however someone out there may shed a little more light on the artist for me tho. All I know is that it was released in 1983 on Street level records along with the rest of the production credit notes from the 12". It is relatively easy to find on a couple of compilations from the past few years and Yam Who did a re edit in 2004. Dj U-Tern from Canada and Beat street records used the opening break for his monumental mixed cd Body Work. I have it on my list of tracks to re edit or sample for that production work I may never actually get around to doing one day...
The Original B side is a wicked instrumental, if ya want a copy there is one on ebay at the moment with a starting bid of $100 USD
BTW 4 days later, it sold for $402 USD

FUNKinc Australia Day

We have returned for 2008 with a monster line up. Simon Caldwell & Frenzie are joining Mr Glass & Robin Knight for a night of Savage Soul, Deep Disco & Bent Boogie to help us celebrate the birth of this great nation.
I've dropped a nice little party starter for you to sample. The band needs no introduction as you should all know them and this is one of their bigger dance floor tracks. Click below and get into a a touch of Crown Heights Affair with Say a Little Prayer for two. Its got the lot! A classic driving disco funk number with all the ingredients for a jumping dance floor. I reckon I'll drop this and a bunch more similar sounds next weekend.
I'll be back later today to tell you of my 2 weeks adventure up and down the coast, I found a couple of gems I've been after for sometime and will share the experience with you.
