Cargo full of Soul

Here's a sample of my UK & French plunder from the recent travels. Big shout out to Paul Carroll for allowing me to rape, pillage & liberate his collection of its doubles and to Des for allowing me to embark on soul mining expedition of his 70K plus vinyl collection. I also unexpectedly stumbled upon a few gems on my Paris trip.

Iv given you a predominantly Modern Soul mix, with a touch of Sweet Soul and some boarder line disco tracks on the end. All tracks are album cuts. I also landed a rather substantial booty haul of 12" & 7" as well. I'll be sure to lay some of that love on you in the coming weeks.

Fight on: ALI OMAR 16/03/58 to 23/06/09

I chose "Fight on" instead of RIP, because just like the great Mohammed Ali was a fighter, so was Ali Bin Mohammed Omar. Not often with his fist but always with his voice, his heart and his actions. Ali fought the good fight for the underdog, for the independent merchants, the indigenous, the young and the old. He stuck it to the man and the empty leaders when they turned their backs on the small guy, the common man and the underprivileged. Although small in stature himself, he roared like the lions in Zion with his words and actions.

This mix is a collection of smoking beats and leftfield soul that remind me of Ali and his attitude to life. Its emotionally charged, so sit back, roll a fat one, pour a long one and enjoy. I hope you can feel a little of what Im saying in these tracks.

I can see the selecta now, still fighting the good fight. Ali's on stage, taking the mic off MJ, pushing both him & Farrah aside and sitting them in their places as he now prepares to shake down the universe's biggest stage in a rubbadub style.

Christmassive mix from harbour funk cruise

A merry ol Yuletide to ye all. I prey the spirits run freely from your chalice tonight and all the next day. In lieu of a special Christmassive mix, here's a bonus 3 hour raw mix taken straight from the decks at the Harbour Funk boat party.

It starts abruptly (no time for edits, I promise to polish it in the new year) and features Santa's lil selectors, Lanu from the Bamboos/Cookin on 3 burners, Frenzie, Mr Glass & Robin Knight.

It was a kickin day on the harbour, the sun was shinning and the soul was burning. The mix gets a little quiet two thirds through as we pulled the SoulShaker floor volume down on the mixer to compensate for everyone running to the lower deck when Cookin on 3 Burners fired up. Fair enough I say, who can compete with a bunch of 45's compared to this tight unit banging the authentic sound out live. Nice work guys, nice work. The after party down the Civic saw Kylie Auldist join the 3 burners on the mic. It's a shame so many people missed this gig. Nice work John for putting it together and brings Kylie & the Burners to town. I'll be sure to get them back in the new year for some more shows.

Ok ok, I know it's been a while so please forgive me. I was thinking about making up some great excuse but then I thought why bother, let's just get to the music. This is a little something which is perfect for a rainy old day like we have here today in Sydney.
I just finished listening to the entire album whilst looking out my window over a wet and stormy coastline and I must say it's one of the best new albums I've heard in a long time. If you are a fan of good soul or jazz (which I think you may be if you are reading this blog!) then please go buy this album. You will not be disappointed. The guys name is Jose James and this is a track off his new album "The Dreamer" on Brownswood Recordings. And yes, that's the Worldwide maestro Mr Gilles Peterson's label so the odds are in your favour. Enjoy!!

Are You Lonely

Here's a fav track of mine however someone out there may shed a little more light on the artist for me tho. All I know is that it was released in 1983 on Street level records along with the rest of the production credit notes from the 12". It is relatively easy to find on a couple of compilations from the past few years and Yam Who did a re edit in 2004. Dj U-Tern from Canada and Beat street records used the opening break for his monumental mixed cd Body Work. I have it on my list of tracks to re edit or sample for that production work I may never actually get around to doing one day...
The Original B side is a wicked instrumental, if ya want a copy there is one on ebay at the moment with a starting bid of $100 USD
BTW 4 days later, it sold for $402 USD

When Will It End?

After another long tiring week, of both good and bad gigs, fun and boring Xmas parties, along with excessive amounts of festive top shelf liquor I've finally got enough time and focus to hit up the blog once more..
Most people who know me well know how much I really dislike this time of year. It's not that I just found out the truth about Santa it's more so the massive amount of muppets who come out and get embarrassingly drunk and hassle us djs to play the most horrible music which they've heard hundreds of times before. Obviously it is part of the job to deal with but I'm getting too old for this I tell ya!! Here's an aptly titled track called "When Will It End" from 3 soul sisters who go by the name of Honey Cone. Nice serving of space funk with a good helping of soul. Enjoy

Ghetto Boy

This album was originally released in May 2005 and i was lucky enough to be given a new vinyl copy a few weeks ago by the boys at R & S in Melbourne (on clear vinyl no less). The first track I have chosen for the blog is from the remix album from Atlantic records "ATLANTIQUITY" its a remix of one of my favorite Donny Hathaway tracks "Little Ghetto Boy" first released by Donny on ATCO as a single in 1972 and here remixed by Freddie Luster specially for this album, it runs just over 5 mins 30 and should be played from start to finish, feel free to kick your slippers off move the coffee table out of the way and enjoy!

NEW YORK PORT AUTHORITY

Here's a driving little funk track titled "I Got It" from the New York Port Authority. The band haled from Amityville, Long Island New York, I guess that reveals the reason behind their name. They recorded on the HDH Invictus label. This was cut in 1977, hence the heavy laden disco keys laid over the stabbing funk horns and clav that is not indicative of too much of the HDH production. I am guessing that this was one of the last releases to come out of the creative stable.
Oh yeah, listen out for the moans of a somewhat satisfied lady...
