If ya a regular to this blog, you know your funk and you'd know Breakestra, so I guess Breakestra dont need no introduction. The gig dont need no selling either as its already sold out. The good news is that SoulShaker djs are the local support. Gimme a woop woop! We are playing before, in the middle & at the end of Breakestra.

To get ya in the mood Iv just laid a furious funk 45 mix. They're all original 45's cut in the same vein & style of what you'll expect to hear from Breakestra. Hell, I may even drop a few of these at the gig.

I start the set off with a sweet soul number that fellow Stones Throw recording artist Mayer Hawthorne recently covered. For a white boy, he did a sterling job at covering this 1969 gem. I hope you dig it.

Mr Glass & Robin Knight are joined with Ian Spicer for the Christmas party.... hold on, wait a minute, we have a late entrant.... special extra guest Del Larkin is dropping by for spin on the back of the national Skunkhour tour. There's also been talk of Miss Annie joining us.

To wet your appetite, here's a funk mix I did tonight. It starts off on the funky xmas tip and then keeps up the same deeper side of early 70's funk. The latter half is more on the breaks edge but heavily borrowed from the same sound. It gets a little random towards the end as I was digging around for something to wrap with, I settled on a modern Afro Jam.

Twenty Four Hour Lover

Ooh baby.... The Twenty four hour lover is keeping with my recent mix formats. All cuts are taken from 7" originals with the pace picking up with disco funk & boogie gems. No pilfered, stolen or acquired digital downloads here bro, and no cd or compilation prostitution. Its just two turntables and a one take mix of 45s, so its a little rusty in places cos' I had a few wines & cant be fucked starting again. None the less all the booty shakers are of the same vibe and a nice indication of the sound we're gunna to lay out for you this Sunday.

Time for something important

Something important alright'. Sixty minutes of deep funky love from my funk 45 collection. There's a couple rockin horse droppings in here with a few more common tracks that sat well with the mood & tone. I did make an excursion off the strictly 45 pathway by unloading a 12 minute chugger from Richard "Dimples" Fields album, (it's finger lickin good) not the title track but rather "Dat Richfield Kat" named after his label. I wrapped the hour up with a kooky lil' Electric Company favourite from the reading freak "easy reader"

funk throwdown

I played a little gig on Sunday night at Tonic, and although it wasn't well attended I still had fun and manage to rip an hour & half of funk straight of the desk live. So plug in and get off to my funk throwdown, it starts off with some more familiar soul-funk tracks as it then moves into deep funk, a touch of disco funk and rounds off with some more obscure Israeli funk & Afro funk. To be quite honest, Im pretty happy with it for a live set.

I'll go back over the mix for another listen in the next day or two and write up the track listing. If by chance I've not done this by the time you are reading the blog post, drop me a comment or a question and I'll let you know what some of the more obscure or unknown tracks are here.

Christmassive mix from harbour funk cruise

A merry ol Yuletide to ye all. I prey the spirits run freely from your chalice tonight and all the next day. In lieu of a special Christmassive mix, here's a bonus 3 hour raw mix taken straight from the decks at the Harbour Funk boat party.

It starts abruptly (no time for edits, I promise to polish it in the new year) and features Santa's lil selectors, Lanu from the Bamboos/Cookin on 3 burners, Frenzie, Mr Glass & Robin Knight.

It was a kickin day on the harbour, the sun was shinning and the soul was burning. The mix gets a little quiet two thirds through as we pulled the SoulShaker floor volume down on the mixer to compensate for everyone running to the lower deck when Cookin on 3 Burners fired up. Fair enough I say, who can compete with a bunch of 45's compared to this tight unit banging the authentic sound out live. Nice work guys, nice work. The after party down the Civic saw Kylie Auldist join the 3 burners on the mic. It's a shame so many people missed this gig. Nice work John for putting it together and brings Kylie & the Burners to town. I'll be sure to get them back in the new year for some more shows.

HARBOUR FUNK: SUN 21st DEC

Harbour Funk! Its a day of water bound funk festivities on board the Lady Rose. Here's the deal, and its a f#%king steal, for $55 bucks you get a day out on the harbour with none other than the SoulShakers Robin Knight, Mr Glass & Frenzie dropping a tug boat load of funk nuggets on you all day long. We'll be setting sail on our soulful voyage in search of paradise lost at 12:30pm from King st wharf and returning at 5pm. At

which time, we reclaim the land and storm the Civic for the continuation of our journey.

Shit, I should also mention that Cookin on 3 Burners are doing a live gig on the boat, big bad pirate Russ Dewbury will conjure up a storm of his own and the little Latino flavoured maestro from the Bamboos, Lanu will also be creating waves on the high seas. Add to the cabin crew, Huwston & the capt'n of this funk junk JC. Now that's an unsinkable tonnage!

All but one are original 7's, unfortunately the Nathan Bartell is on reissue as there is only 3 known copies in the world (apparently) Some are well known, others are rare as hens teeth, some are a little scratchy and others in mint. Funk 45 MoFo Money Mix

Funk 45 MoFo Money Mix, that's 45 minute worth of funk 7". Remember those things in the picture, they're my turntables and seven's I just used and dj's used them way back in the day kids... The mix is a little rusty, I threw it together in one take tonight with 17 of my fav 45's and a couple of nasty shaftman samples. I recorded on our super cool Roland Edirol 24bit hand held recorder (this mix is straight of the SD card) This thing is so dope, you just drop it in your top pocket and plug straight out your mixer in any venue and hey presto! you have a mix down. Expect to see loads more up on the blog thanks to this lil gizmo.

Nasty Masterpiece

Clarence Reid may be better known to you by his alternate persona & Stage name of Blowfly. Clarence was a songwriter for many hit soul acts in the 60's & 70's such as Betty Wright, Sam & Dave, Gwen McGrae and KC & The Sunshine band. As Blowfly, he has recorded numerous albums, mostly porno-matic sex spoofs of other songs as well as original raps themed around sex. His stage name originated from his grandmother, who overheard him as a child singing "Do the Twist" as "Suck My Dick", and said "You is nastier than a blowfly."

Clarence recorded a few hits of his own in the 60's including "Nobody But You Babe" under his real name and a Blowfly song called "Rap Dirty" in 1965. Many hip hop historians consider "Rap Dirty" as the first rap song because he talks in rhyme and it has then slang term for talk "rap" in the title.

My personal favourite of Clarence Reid's is this track I've loaded up for you "Masterpiece." Kenny Dope has recently release this on his Kay Dee records as a 7" edit & dope beats edit, but here it is in its original form as it was recorded in 1973? Date not printed on label.

When Will It End?

After another long tiring week, of both good and bad gigs, fun and boring Xmas parties, along with excessive amounts of festive top shelf liquor I've finally got enough time and focus to hit up the blog once more..
Most people who know me well know how much I really dislike this time of year. It's not that I just found out the truth about Santa it's more so the massive amount of muppets who come out and get embarrassingly drunk and hassle us djs to play the most horrible music which they've heard hundreds of times before. Obviously it is part of the job to deal with but I'm getting too old for this I tell ya!! Here's an aptly titled track called "When Will It End" from 3 soul sisters who go by the name of Honey Cone. Nice serving of space funk with a good helping of soul. Enjoy

Regal @ The Next Funkinc

Here's a little sample from Regal's recent album, Loop Dreams. After a long hiatus, while remixing some local Aussie acts & finding his new sound, REGAL has finally returned to the melting pot, with his debut solo album. Loop Dreams is a little gem from the one-time original founding member of both THE WISEGUYS (Wall Of Sound) & BRONX DOGS (Heavenly/Marble Bar) two of the UK's most revered underground acts of the 90's. This Album is a nice blend of Downbeat, Hip hop & Breaks with heavy soul & Funk influences.
The track I have chosen to give you a taste of is The Mack; a down right funky breaks track with sweet arse vox samples, ladies and gentlemen, this is the moment we all been waiting for.....

NEW YORK PORT AUTHORITY

Here's a driving little funk track titled "I Got It" from the New York Port Authority. The band haled from Amityville, Long Island New York, I guess that reveals the reason behind their name. They recorded on the HDH Invictus label. This was cut in 1977, hence the heavy laden disco keys laid over the stabbing funk horns and clav that is not indicative of too much of the HDH production. I am guessing that this was one of the last releases to come out of the creative stable.
Oh yeah, listen out for the moans of a somewhat satisfied lady...
